CLASS
READING MATERIALS:
First
Assignment:
For our
first class, we will consider various
aspects of a recent case that is still
in its early stages--The Marshall
County Coal Company v. John
Oliver. You may have seen the
HBO satire program in which John
Oliver made fun of Robert E. Murray, a
coal company executive. I
encourage all of you to Google these
names and see what sorts of articles
and information you might find about
the case.
For our
purposes, we will examine various
pleadings, briefs and orders in this
case for the primary purpose of
introducing you to certain features of
the legal system in the United
States. We will use these
materials to illustrate aspects of law
which you may encounter in your other
classes as you begin your legal
studies.
In
general our method will be to work
backwards from a recent order issued
by a United
States District Court for the
Northern District of West Virginia
issued August 10, 2017. We
will add to the materials for review
over the course of the week.
But, for now, start with the August 10
order and the helpful links below
(plus, optionally, anything else you
can find of interest).
